Alpacas at Abenaki Acres

Bill and Elizabeth Johnson of Abenaki Acres Farm in Stockton, NJ, have built their alpaca farm over the past six years by being visible in the community at a wide variety of events. Elizabeth and farm manager Randy Strong have given educational presentations to over 500 students at several area schools in 2009.

Participating in2005 01 31 Anna's Pictures 007 (2) the Sergeantsville Farmers Market for three years has provided the Johnsons with an opportunity to introduce alpacas to hundreds of Delaware Township residents. As 2010 begins, Abenaki has lined up some interesting events where alpacas and fiber products will be the main focus. Young and old alike enjoy the gentle nature of these beautiful animals. You can join the Johnsons at these upcoming events:

January 24, 2010 Hunterdon Art Museum, 7 Lower Center Street, Clinton, NJ, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Hands-on knitting activities for children and adults; alpacas for the public to enjoy and alpaca garments and fleeces that can be purchased, with a percentage of the proceeds being donated to the museum; local spinner, Karen Strong, will be demonstrating the2005 01 31 Anna's Pictures 004 process of spinning yarn from raw alpaca fleece. March 20, 2010 Sandy Ridge Church Annual Flea Market, 47 Sandy Ridge Road, in Delaware Township, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; Alpacas and alpaca products will be available for the enjoyment of all those in attendance.

April 18, 2010 Grounds For Sculpture, 18 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton, NJ 08619, #609-586-0616, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  As the original site of the NJ State Fairgrounds up until 1980, Grounds For Sculpture celebrates each year with “A Day at the Fair.” All types of livestock are brought in, this year Abenaki alpacas will be present.  Educational presentations will be given and fleeces and products made from alpacas will be available for purchase.  Spinning and weaving demonstrations will be given by local fiber artist, Pat Flanagan. A percentage of all sales will be donated to Heifer International.
